Digital Asset Management as a foundation technology for dynamic publishing.
20/01/2011
The DAM industry still provides primarily horizontal applications. These are solutions that have indexing, handling, searching, transforming and sharing capabilities. Of course, creating libraries and categories of files that can easily be searched, classified, utilized and distributed is a "nice thing to have" and one could no longer imagine how they managed it without. If one looks for a vertical solution, he needs to integrate with media-production suites and other systems in order to keep pace with business requirements.
Digital Asset Management for dynamic publishing
Document production is slightly moving away from desktop to smart online templates in order to automate the publishing process. It does no longer has to be a skilled InDesign artist to create every single communication. But what's more compelling, DAM is obviously built in.
An example of Digital Asset Management for a dynamic publishing project is the generation of catalogues. Today the market offers technologies to collaborate on the production of catalogues. Within the Vit2Print software, the CataVit application is placed on top of a DAM solution. Assets from the DAM are deployed to automate the creation of a catalogue. The document engine is the Adobe InDesign Server and hence the output is an InDesign file.
DAM for commercial collateral: Marketing Resource Management (MRM)?
Obviously corporates and media service providers have different needs then publishers. For those companies, adding collaborative software on top of a Digital Asset Management solution means a real boost. One can think of technologies such as project management and online proofing on top of DAM.
